Gagliarda is an attractive guitar solo by an unknown composer written near the end of the Renaissance period of music (circa. 1600) and a lovely piece to play around the Christmas period.

Gagliarda (Italian) means Galliard and is a dance form which involves jumps and leaps regarding the dancers and their dance moves. The Galliard was often played on the Lute – so this is probably a transcription for the guitar from the Lute tablature.

This 2 page guitar piece has dropped D Tuning D A D G B E. Written in standard music notation there is no Tablature. The piece is in 3/4 time and at a tempo of 96 beats a minute.

21st Century Spanish Guitar by Adam Levin

Soon to be released on the Naxos label is 21st Century Spanish guitar. The album 21st Spanish Guitar features the American virtuoso classical guitar player Adam Levin. Thirty new scores have been commissioned by Adam Levin from Spanish composers Salvador Brotons, Carlos Cruz de Castro, David del Puerto, Octavio Vazquez,  Leonardo Balada, Ricardo Lloca and Eduardo Morales-Caso.

The album was produced by Norbert Kraft, Grammy award nominated recording engineer. Volume I with 19 tracks is released on May 28th 2013.

Andres Segovia – the influence of his Classical and Spanish Guitar Music

Andres Segovia (1893 – 1987) can be thought of as the father of the Spanish and Classical Guitar in the 20th century. He was able to play the guitar to large enthusiastic audiences well into his nineties. I can remember going with friends to listen to his remarkable playing to a packed out Brangwyn Hall in Wales, UK. That night he probably received 5 or 6 encores and only stopped playing as it was getting impractical for him to be led on and off the stage after every encore.

The Segovia concert took place sometime in the early 1980’s and as far as I know Segovia hadn’t previously played in Wales – leave a message if you know more. However, his classical arrangements of Bach and his beautiful playing of great Spanish music using such a superb technique have had a lasting influence on generations of guitar players and composers.

Segovia’s guitar recordings in the early 20th century influenced and popularised the guitar which helped lead the way to the rock n’ roll era and the great guitar music of the 1960’s.

John Williams – Spanish Guitar Music Tour

Great to see John Williams Spanish Guitar wizard and legend on tour in the UK in Summer 2013.  John Williams is due to play Sandwich on the 1st May, Wallingford on the 2nd May and Sevenoaks Summer Festival on 4th July. Lincoln Cathedral on the 23rd July has been rescheduled from the 16th.

John Williams a great technician of the Spanish Classical Guitar is known for playing and recording all the Spanish guitar repertoire, the great classical composers like Bach and Scarlatti as well as experimenting in modern guitar music as well as mixing it up with some Rock. John Williams is probably most well known for his great performance of Cavatina used in the feature film The Deer Hunter composed and arranged by Stanley Myers.

Recently I noticed his wonderful guitar style used as background music accompanied by orchestra. This was on a re-run of the British TV series Parsley Sage. The music is beautifully written and arranged by TV composer Christopher Gunning.
